NthLink proposes treating “nth-degree” links not just as implicit paths but as explicit, indexable objects. By doing so, distributed systems can accelerate queries, improve routing resilience, and more flexibly manage data locality and load. Core idea Traditional graph systems store edges as binary relationships between nodes and compute multi-hop connections on demand. NthLink complements this by materializing selected multi-hop relationships (for example, 2nd-degree or 3rd-degree connections) as first-class links. Each NthLink carries metadata: its source, destination, degree (n), provenance (how it was derived), weight or cost, timestamp, and optional validation signatures. This allows fast lookups for common queries that otherwise require expensive breadth-first searches across the network. Benefits - Performance: Materialized nth-degree links reduce query latency for common traversal patterns, enabling near-instant recommendations or route discovery without repeated expensive joins or traversals. - Resilience: In distributed overlays, NthLink can provide alternate routes known ahead of time.
